What Are Neck Lines?
Neck lines develop when skin loses elasticity and collagen support, while repetitive neck movement and underlying platysma muscles can make horizontal lines, vertical bands and laxity more visible.
Without treatment, neck lines and laxity may become more noticeable over time as collagen declines and skin becomes thinner.
Early assessment helps determine whether the main concern is horizontal creasing, muscle banding, skin laxity or a combination.

Neck ageing is rarely caused by one factor alone. We assess the depth of the lines, skin laxity, collagen loss and platysma muscle activity before deciding whether the concern needs skin tightening, line correction, muscle treatment or a combination approach.
Who This Is (and Isn't) For
Neck rejuvenation treatment may be suitable if you
- Have visible horizontal neck lines or creases
- Notice vertical platysma bands when tensing the neck
- Have loose or crepey neck skin
- Have reduced jaw-to-neck definition
- Want a doctor-led, non-surgical approach to neck rejuvenation
You may not be suitable — or will need extra assessment — if you
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding, where relevant to the proposed treatment
- Have an active skin infection, open wound or inflammation in the treatment area
- Have a known allergy, implanted device or medical contraindication relevant to the proposed treatment
A consultation and physical assessment is required to confirm suitability — this page is general education, not a diagnosis.
What Causes Neck Lines?
Neck lines can be caused by a combination of factors, including:
- Natural collagen and elastin loss with age
- Repetitive neck movement and posture, including “tech neck”
- Sun damage
- Thinner, more fragile neck skin
- Platysma muscle banding
- Genetics
Because neck ageing has multiple possible causes, treatment should identify whether skin, muscle, volume or tissue laxity is contributing most.
Why Neck Lines Persist or Deepen
Neck lines may become more noticeable because:
- Skin collagen naturally declines with age
- The neck moves frequently throughout the day
- Sun protection on the neck is often neglected
- Platysma muscle bands can become more pronounced with repeated use

For energy-based treatments (e.g. HIFU, Fotona 4D, Exion)
- Temporary redness, warmth, tenderness or mild swelling may occur
- Treatment-specific risks and contraindications vary according to the device and treatment area
For injectable treatments (e.g. Radiesse, Ellansé, Profhilo Structura, Botulinum Toxin)
- Temporary bruising, swelling, redness or tenderness may occur
- Injectable treatments have product-, muscle- and area-specific risks that should be discussed before treatment
For thread-based treatments
- Temporary swelling, bruising, tenderness or tightness may occur
- Treatment-specific risks will be discussed before treatment

Neck Lines & Neck Rejuvenation FAQs
What causes neck lines?
Neck lines may be related to collagen and elastin loss, repetitive neck movement, posture, sun exposure, thinner neck skin, platysma muscle activity, genetics or a combination of these factors.
What is tech neck?
“Tech neck” refers to repeated neck flexion associated with looking down at phones, laptops or other devices. Repetitive movement can make existing horizontal neck creases more noticeable, although neck lines also have other causes.
Why do I have neck lines even when I'm young?
Genetics, natural skin structure, repeated neck movement and horizontal creasing can make neck lines visible even in younger adults. Ageing is only one contributor.
What are platysma bands?
Platysma bands are vertical neck muscle bands that can become more visible when the neck is tensed. They are different from horizontal neck lines and may require a different treatment approach.
Can neck lines be improved without surgery?
It depends on the cause and severity. Non-surgical treatments may be considered for skin laxity, collagen loss, horizontal lines or platysma muscle activity, but they cannot reproduce the changes of surgical neck lifting.
What is the best treatment for neck lines?
There is no single best treatment. HIFU, Fotona 4D, Exion, Face Thread Lift, Radiesse, Ellansé, Profhilo Structura or Botulinum Toxin may be considered depending on whether the main concern is skin laxity, line depth, volume or muscle banding.
Can HIFU improve neck lines?
HIFU may improve neck firmness and laxity by stimulating collagen and tightening tissue. It may be more relevant when loose skin contributes to the concern than when the main issue is a deep horizontal crease or platysma band.
Can Botulinum Toxin improve neck bands?
Botulinum Toxin may be considered when visible platysma muscle activity contributes to vertical neck bands. It targets muscle activity rather than replacing lost volume or tightening all types of loose neck skin.
Can neck treatments be combined?
Yes, in selected patients. Because neck ageing can involve skin, muscle and volume at the same time, a doctor may consider a combination approach based on assessment.
How long does neck rejuvenation take to show results?
The timeline depends on the treatment selected. Some treatments create an immediate lifting or correction effect, while collagen-stimulating and energy-based treatments may improve progressively over several weeks.
Are neck line treatments permanent?
Most non-surgical neck rejuvenation treatments are not permanent. Duration and maintenance depend on the treatment, skin condition, muscle activity and individual response.
How much does neck line treatment cost at Clinic RX?
Pricing depends on the type of neck concern, treatment selected and individual plan. Final pricing is confirmed during consultation.
